UFCW Local 791 contract set to expire
UFCW 791 -- Five-thousand members of
UFCW Local 791 at 38 Shaw’s Grocery stores in Wells, Maine will watch
their contract with Shaw’s grocery expire at midnight Saturday, August
2nd.
UFCW members and Shaw’s
Grocery remain far apart on virtually every economic-related issue.
Shaw’s proposal includes
plans to triple
the amount of employee contribution for family health coverage by the
end of the contract. Worker pensions are also under fire with a plan to
freeze the pension plan and move workers to a 401k program. Shaw’s has
even proposed gift cards for some workers in lieu of a raise.
With the economy
floundering and gas prices reaching record highs, Shaw’s plan to roll
back worker benefits stands as a direct attack on the well-being of the
employees who contribute to the company’s success.
